Bees saal baad: Bhagalpur DSP 'killer' nabbed
BHAGALPUR: After playing hide and seek with the Bhagalpur district police for nearly 20 years, Birla alias Shahjahan, one of the prime accused in the deputy superintendent of police Sukhdeo Mehra burning case, finally fell in the police dragnet on Friday afternoon.
The deputy superintendent of police was burnt alive on January 10, 1987 along with his official jeep by a mob of agitators in the Nathnagar locality when he had gone there to maintain law and order.

The agitators had blocked the road against alleged discrepancies in their electricity bills. Bhagalpur superintendent of police Jitendra Singh Gangwar told TOI the trial against all other accused has already begun.
"Birla was wanted in the case but we could not nab him because he took shelter at different places in other states," the superintendent of police said, adding the accused, who has already been chargesheeted in the case, has been forwarded to jail.
Incidentally, the trial in the case of murder of deputy superintendent of police could be started only after the present public prosecutor informed the superintendent of police that the case diary was missing.
"That's old news. Fact is, we have already located the diary and I hope the criminals would be brought to justice very soon," the superintendent of police said.
